Adathoda vasica is a number one strong bronchodilator and expectorant siddha herb.The pharmacological activities of vasicine and vasicinone are well known.Investigations on vasicine showed bronchodilatory activity(comparable to theophzlline) both in vitro and in vivo.Both the alkaloids in combination (1:1) have showed pronounced bronchodilatory activity in vivo and in vitro.Vasicine also exhibited strong respiratory stimulant activity,moderate hypotensive activity and cardiac-depressant effect.Vasicinone was devoid of studies on Adathoda has shown that on intravenous administration,it was 1/20,1/40 as active as codeine on mechanically and electrically induced cough hn rabits and guinea pigs.After oral administration to the guinea pig the antitussive activity of Adathoda was similar to codeine against couging induced by irritant aerosols.
