"There are some people who claim that Ayurveda is the oldest medical system, but from the research done with the help of available historical data, it is evident that Siddha system of medicine is much older and has more history than even Ayurveda. Not only is this medical system the oldest, this is a medical system with lots of specialities; its specialities far outweigh the Ayurvedic medicine" Thanks to the authors team from  Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur, India for the nice article on  "Fundamental Aspect and Basic Concept of Siddha Medicines"  http://www.sysrevpharm.org/article/42

Synopsis of Siddha System of medicine (Written by Dr.Ambai Arunachalam,President CCIM,Govt. Of India)

Synopsis of Siddha System of Medicine

(Dr. V. Arunachalam, M.D. (Siddha), President, CCIM )

Every human race has its own system of medicines namely Traditional Medicine.  As many as 5000 folklore medical practices are documented in the world.  But not all medical practices are actively utilized for the well-being of the mankind like the traditional systems of India viz., Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani. The oldest of the above said three, the Dravidian (Siddha) System of Medicine is contributing much to the health care of human beings.

Siddha system could be considered as the crown of all the traditional arts of the ancient Tamils owing to its richness and simplicity. There is no two opinions about the ancientness of the Dravidian Civilization of the erstwhile submerged Land –“Kumarikandam”, otherwise known as Lemuria Continent which was situated in the Indian Ocean. Archeological evidences also prove this. The system of medicine that was prevalent in the ancient Southern part of India may be called as the “Dravidian system of Medicine”, or “Siddha System of Medicine”.

The period of origin of the Siddha System is also substantiated by the extensive references about the medical practice that are available in ancient Tamil Literature.  The ancient Tamil Grammar work “Tholkappiam”, various other works of Sangam literature and the ‘Tamil Veda’, “Thirukkural”, not only mentions, but also gives a better picture about this system.  Thiru. T.V. Sambasivam Pillai, who compiled the monumental work of Siddha (Tamil-English) Medical Dictionary, dates the origin of the Siddha System back to B.C.10, 000 - B.C. 4,000. According to the historians, the following are the dates of the other systems of medicines.

Ayurvedic System of Medicine
Charaka Samhita 300 BC
Susruta Samhita 300 BC
Bava Prakasam 800 AD

The Romanian system of medicine 300 AD
Unani System of Medicine 600 AD
Greek System of Medicine 900 AD
Allopath               1700 AD
Homeopathy                   1800 AD

But nobody can fix the exact date of origin of the Siddha System of Medicine.

The greatest of all births is the birth as mankind.  It is absolutely essential to preserve a human being to achieve Eternal Bliss.  The simplest way for a healthy living is to live according to the “Laws of Nature”.  This is emphasized by the Siddhars who lived longer. Siddhars led a simple life above the narrow divisions of caste, creed, religion, colour and nation.  These noble people have not only contributed to a system of medicine, but also for the knowledge of Eternity, Alchemy and Yogic living.

One question that comes to the mind of everybody who studies the history of Siddha Medicine is about the number of Siddhars. “Rasavada Nool Siddhar Mayam”, clarifies that they were in millions.

“Themappa Yogigal than kodakodi
Thiramana gnanigalthan kodakodi
Kamappa Rishihalavar kodakodi

Traditional Siddha Medical literature claim that washing of the leaf with water for 7 times can reduce concentration of bitter latex from
the gel which might be beneficial in healing of gastric ulcer. A scientific study has been published recently which was carried out by a Medical Pharmacologist from Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, Nepal. This is one of the best study in which author has cited Siddha literature. Siddha and this year medicine nobel prize (2016)

This year's Nobel prize for medicine has gone to a Japanese scientist Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi for his research on autophagy. Autophagy means to "self eat". In other words, the process by which the human body eats it own damaged cells and unused proteins. Autophagy is a natural process and also one which occurs in cases of starvation. The failure of autophagy is one of the main reasons for accumulation of damaged cells which eventually leads to various diseases in the body. Autophagy is important to prevent/fight cancer and also plays a vital role in degrading and 'consuming' cells infected by bacteria and viruses.

I have to observe here that ancient India had recommended a practice of fasting (Ekadasi) one day in a fortnight. Many of us religiously follow this practice to this day as a penance for spiritual progress without any idea of the biological and therapeutic benefits of this practice. Through this process of fasting induced autophagy, our body repaired its damaged and degenerated cells or used up the proteins of the damaged cells for its survival.

Whenever modern science conquers a frontier in any field, it somehow relates back to a quaint spiritual practice followed in India for generations.

A day in a fortnight spent in prayer and divine contemplation was a tonic for the mind and soul while the practice of fasting ensured that the body would heal and rejuvenate itself.

Clearly, our ancients believed in a process of holistic healing of both the body and the mind.  They were able to, quite remarkably, connect the yearning for spiritual progress in a human being with the biological necessity of the human body. One cannot but marvel, and bow our heads with admiration and reverence, at their wisdom and deep scientific understanding of the body and the mind.

Siddha  handling insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Use 15g Aavaarai kudineer made into decoction along with insulin.. this will help scaling down insulin units.

2 times daily 5-10 mts before food

Morning dose may be split into two with afternoon
AK is a very powerful alpha glucosidase and amylase inhibitor.
Hence better to be administered almost with food Than before or after
Means AK reduces absorption of glucose from gut itself

Plus AK would counter the micro and macro vascular changes inherent to diabetes

Dose of AK is very important. 15 to 20g bd made into decoctiondr.
Under dosages won't work

Siddhars tried for extraction from herbals. For example, kashayam (aqueous extract of polar compounds), nei/thailam/ennai (extrction of of non polar compounds using edible solvents), mooligai uppu (ash extract of heat stable polar compounds), kuzhi thailam (non polar compounds), thiraavagam/theeneer (volatile oils), madakku thailam (concentrating the highly polar compounds), etc. In kashayam itself, we have different methods such as ooral kudi neer (cold percolation), applying heat (hot percolation),  adai kudineer, etc. We had used different combination of oils to extract phytochemicals from herbals (Eg: mukoottu ennai, ayinkoottu ennai). Similarly, in aniaml products and mienral products, Siddha do have extraction methods. Only difference from currently used western pharmacology is ; Siddha used the edible solvent systems (coconut oil, sesame oil water, cow ghee, iluppai ennai, etc), whereas modern pharmacology uses volatile solvents (petroleum ether, ethanol, methanol, n-butanol, etc). After extraction, these volatile solvents will be evaporated, thus we get concentrated herbal extracts. In Siddha, the concentrated extracts are dissolved in edible solvents, we consume it as scuh without removing the solvent. So, Siddha also used extraction and isolation of phytocompounds from herbals. Why cant we adopt modern technologies to do the same extraction? If I do it in Siddha drug, then why you call it as non-Siddha drug? Why modernization of Siddha drugs are not allowed? During snake bite and other unconscious conditions, Siddha used drugs in parenteral routes. Siddha used sharp objects like paddy or knife to make a small incision on scalp or on the snake bite site and applied Siddha emergency drugs on it. When it is rubbed, then the drug is absorbed into the blood. this is called as subcuatenous routes of drug administration, which is used in insuline injection and adrenalin inejction. Why cant we use the same syringes to administer Siddha injections after a research? We will get many emergency drugs from Siddha. Applying oil on scalp or on joint for sinusitis, urinary burning micturation, cooling the body, for giddiness, for pain, to induce sleep, etc. - all these are nothing but the special drug deliver system called as transdermal drug delivery system. We should talk this to the modern doctors. We too have the liposomal drug delivery technology. So, understanding the Siddha by its deep through science is important. Then, innovations and modernization in Siddha is the mandatory. otherwise, it will slowly die. During the innovative modernization, the science will lead it, not the religious philosophy. This leads to herbal injections or some plaster on joint to deliver Siddha drug, etc. All these should be accepted to develope Siddha.

Aadaathodai vaasica contains Bromhexine, which is responsible for the expectorant activity in cough. So, we use aadaathodai manappagu and somebody use isolated bromhexine tablet in cough. Both are same. We should selecte a safe, cheep and highly standared preparation for our clinical practice. According to patent law; bromhexine is derived from a Siddha herbal to use in cough, but, it is still the Siddha property. Since the aadathodai is already in use for cough, the isolated bromhexine can not be patented as a new invention. The isolation is the new invention, but the usage in cough is the Siddha property. In this context, why cant we ask governemnt to permit to use bromhexine tablet also in clinical practice? After consuming aadathodai manappagu, our intestine absorbs bromhexine into blood. We dont know the aadathodai plant collected in this region/climate/month will have bromhexine in the expected amount. So, what is wrong in using the standard bromhexine? The liver convert the bromhexine into ambroxol in blood, that also has expectorant property. So, allopathy company convert bromhexine into ambroxol in their lab and make as a new tablet. In you convert the paddy into Briyaani or gangi or dosa or idli, all belongs to/deriative of paddy. So, this is just an innovation and not the invention. According to me, using addathoda manappagu, tablet bromhexine, tablet ambroxol all are equall in the treatmet of productive cough. For other usage such as menorrhagea, I dont suggest bromhexame or ambroxol, but I support using aadathodai manappagu. Similarly, there are a lot of drugs derived from herbals/natural products being used by allopathy doctors. Strictly speaking, these drugs are our property. They are the innovative products of Traditional medical systems. We need to get official approval to use such products. In china, they have injections from herbal, that is used by a Chineese traditional doctor. Why we should always go bakwards, just try to move forwards. We are asking the drugs related to traditional system. Somebody can work out for it.

Emergency treatment in Siddha

There are no separate guidelines for emergency management. In Siddha , all diseases in every stage is recommended to be considered as an emergency itself and reversal guidelines are to be initiated then and  there itself without " wait and watch". Strict monitoring is also advocated. By resorting to accurate evidence based guidelines on time in Siddha, emergencies will get resolved fast even without they are recognised as emergencies. Only a medical science which can effectively diagnose the cause and mechanisms of the pathogenesis and  prevent a medical emergency can only resolve the same. Adjustment therapies in emergencies are only adjustment with no guarantee of security and safety. Siddha  doctors are to advance a lot in the practice of SCIENCE BASED MEDICINE to both prevent and reverse an emergency

Siddha medicine Adathodai manappagu

Invariably all gynaec syrups indicated for DUB do contain Adathoda. It can even control Post partum hemorrhage if given in adequate dose study done as early as 1980 says so... As strong as Oxytocin and Methergin
It's a time to drive home the point that Adathodai manappagu is a boon for those suffering from DUB when administered continuously for 3 months even though the excessive or continual bleeding stops within a few days. It corrects the irregularity of the cycles also. Though it can halt the bleeding temporarily in abnormal uterine bleeding due to organic lesions, Adathodai manappagu is most powerful in DUBs where it can invariably cure it after an adequate course of treatment for 90 days .
Adathoda  manappagu in 20 ml bd will be handy.. Until bleeding stops thereafter 10 ml bd for 3 months would be a ' sweet' choice

Chennai based impcops to open 26th Drug sales Depot in Kozhikode, kerala in 2 months

Chennai based ‘Impcops’ to open 26th Drug Sale Depot in Kozhikode in Kerala in 2 months

Peethaambaran Kunnathoor, Chennai
Friday, June 24, 2016, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]

The long standing demand of the Siddha and Unani medical practitioners of north Kerala will be soon realized with the opening of a Drug Sales Depot (DSD) of the Chennai based Indian Medical Practitioners Co-operative Pharmacy and Stores Ltd (Impcops) in Kozhikode in Kerala, said its secretary Dr Pon Singh.

The Kozhikode depot will be the 26th sales depot of Impcops and the second one in Kerala. First one is located near the Siddha hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

“The director board of Impcops has decided to open its 26th sales depot in Kerala considering the demand of the Kerala Siddha Graduates Association. The board has authorized the secretary to find out a suitable shop in Kozhikode city in consultation with the president and the local director (director board member from Kerala). The board member from Kerala, Dr. Arun Baby has been assigned to do the preliminary work by finding out a suitable shop-room and we will go for next steps as soon as the room is taken”, said Dr Pon Singh.

Dr Arun Baby, who is the president of All Kerala Siddha Doctors’ Forum (AKSDF), said the association has been demanding a drug sale depot of Impcops in Malabar area for a long time for the benefit of the Siddha and Unani practitioners in north Kerala where a lot of practitioners of both the Ayush systems are practicing. The Unani and Siddha practitioners from Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wynadu, Kannur, Kasargode and Palakkadu are now availing their medical requirements from the Coimbatore depot. Very few medicines are supplied by Oushadhi from Thrissur, he said.

“Once the depot is opened in Kozhikode, the state government owned Oushadhi can reduce their risk in procuring and supplying medicines from the Thiruvananthapuram depot. For all the 28 Siddha dispensaries under the central project (NHM) and Unani institutions the medicines are supplied by Oushadhi”, he added.

Regarding the scope of Siddha medicines in Kerala, Dr Arun Baby pointed out that the recent establishment of a Unani medical college in Kozhikodu would support the sale growth of the depot. Impcops’ ‘kashaayam’ powder has very good impact in Kerala as they do not add preservatives in medicines. Besides there are a lot of Unani doctors in Kozhikode, Wynadu, Malappuram and the nearby places. The members of Impcops will get 25 per cent discount for all medicines bought from the Society. More than one thousand Ayurveda physicians from Kerala are Impcops members.

Further, he said AKSDF has a plan to start one Siddha medical college in Kerala under cooperative sector and deliberations are going on among the Forum members now.                   http://www.pharmabiz.com/NewsDetails.aspx?aid=95888&sid=1

Lack of facilities for higher studies forces Siddha graduates in Kerala to opt for non-medical courses

Peethaambaran Kunnathoor, Chennai
Friday, May 20, 2016, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]

Lack of facilities for higher studies for Siddha graduates in Kerala is  forcing the students who have completed the course, BSMS, to opt for non-medical courses and find placement in areas other than medical for their livelihood.

Many of the graduates in Siddha are now doing MBA, LLB and other industry related diploma courses, and getting into industrial jobs/business activities, says Dr. Arun Baby, president of All Kerala Siddha Doctors Forum (AKSDF).

“A large number of BSMS graduates are now engaged in various business activities. Some others are doing UG/PG programmes in non-medical subjects like MBA, LLB or Diploma courses on technical side. They do not want to practice the system here. No support is getting them from the government side or from any private sector,” he added.

According to AKSDF, the major hurdle for their higher study, MD Siddha, is absence of an institution, either in the public sector or private sector. The only one college conducting Siddha degree course is the Santhigiri Siddha Medical College at the state capital. It has no PG programme.

Although the Siddha graduates want to take admission in the government institutions in Tamil Nadu, the hub of Siddha, language becomes a stumbling block. The syllabus and the medium of instruction are in Tamil language. Besides, for getting admission there, the Kerala graduate has to register his/her degree with the Tamil Nadu medical council. It is a difficult process and after wards, the difficulty will become severe when he/she wants to come back to the home state. Two government colleges and a few private institutions conduct PG programme in Siddha there.

Dr. Arun said as per the latest information, the number of Siddha graduates in Kerala is over 600, but none of them is doing PG programme in the subject. Only those who did their UG course in Tamil Nadu, they might be doing their PG in the colleges there. But, number of such students is very less. Job opportunity for Siddha doctors in Kerala is a major problem.

While pointing out the issues faced by the BSMS graduates in Kerala today, the president of AKSDF said very few Siddha graduates are working on clinical side as the chances for them are less. Unless the government encourages by providing job opportunities, they cannot establish as a medical practitioner under the Ayush systems in Kerala. Government should take up programmes and projects for setting up more Siddha hospitals, dispensaries, drug manufacturing units and subsequently to appoint the Siddha graduates as medical officers, drug inspectors and in other capacities the health department requires.

The state has only one government siddha hospital which is located at Vallakkadavu in Thiruvananthapuram. In addition to that, there are eight dispensaries.

For Ayurveda system, Kerala has 127 hospitals, 815 dispensaries, 20 sub-centres and three medical colleges under government, 14 medical colleges under private sector and two self-financing medical colleges.

SIDDHA -Nano Medicine

It is believed that the practitioners of Siddha, the ancient Indian system of medicine, utilized the basic tenets of nanotechnology in preparing medicines for the treatment of various diseases. The Siddha preparation 'Bhasma' (Parpam), which is widely recommended for the treatment of a variety of chronic ailments, is an ash obtained from some metallic compounds through incineration. When the 'bhasma' particles were analysed recently through latest instruments, they fell in the range of nanoparticles. Revealing these facts at a UGC-sponsored seminar organized by Patna University chemistry department Sanjay Kumar, Rakesh Kumar Singh and others of Aryabhatta Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Aryabhatta Knowledge University, and Sweety Supriya and Manoranjan Kar of IIT Patna said 'Abhraka Bhasma', a derivative of mica, is an ancient nanomedicine. It is widely used in cases of pernicious and sickle cell anaemia, Bells Palsy, hepatic dysfunction, leukaemia, cystic fibrosis and cervical dysplasia and it is known for its penetrative and spreading property in the whole body and various micro tissues."We have synthesized 'Abhraka Bhasma' through X-ray diffractometer, vibrating sample magnetometer, scanning electron microscopy and Photoluminescence spectrometer and found that it is in nanocrystalline form and may be considered as a nanomedicine," they said. They further observed that the 'bhasma' cannot only be used as a very good nanomedicine but is also applied for various technological innovations for its magnetic and luminescence properties. This preparation is natural and eco-friendly as well as cost-effective, they added.

ABSTRACT
Each and every system of medicine has its own exclusive specialities. Selection of drugs based on the chemical composition and action is the common entity followed all over the world. An important method of selection of drugs based on the tastes, characteristics, effects and ultimate taste has been followed in India’s holistic indigenous medical science called Siddha science. According to Siddha science, all the things in the universe both inside and outside the body are made up of five basic elements namely space, air, fire, water and soil in balanced proportion. The basic motto of Siddha science is, “Food itself is medicine and medicine itself is food”. The six tastes of food materials are also composed of these basic elements. Intake of all these six tastes at right proportion in our diet maintains the physiological homeostasis in our body. Excessive intake of a particular taste or avoiding some other taste leads to alteration. Such an alteration in this balanced proportion leads to ailments. Giving a drug that balances this alteration is the treatment method of Siddha science. Hence most of the drugs in Siddha science are the ingredients of our food we take in our regular diet. This paper deals with this advanced and excellent method of treatment. This paper includes various topics – nature of the body, humours of the body, assessing the patient, diagnosis, the six tastes ofthe drugs, nature of drugs and selection of drugs.

Keywords
Siddha Treatment modalities, Taste in siddha, Non-Invasive Siddha diagnostics.

Treat excess bleeding the old Siddha Way

Treat Excess Bleeding the Old Siddha Way

Oldenlandia Umbellata

There is a very effective drug, which Siddha Vaidyars use to great advantage. It is not part of the traditional Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia. It is Imbural— the drug is prepared from a single herb and is effective in preventing bleeding. It is especially useful in menorrhagia, where women experience excessive bleeding during the menstrual cycle.

Imbural, the scientific name of which is Oldenlandia Umbellata, belongs to the family Rubiaceae. It is a herb, which has great styptic action and can stop all kinds of bleeding. In English, it is called dye-root or chaya-root and is used in dying as a mordant. It belongs to the same family as another popular Ayurvedic herb called manjishta, from which a red dye is extracted.

Oldenlandia Umbellata (I do love the sound of the name) is a herb with small white flowers and is found quite commonly all over India; mostly in the drier tracts. The herb has many uses and is used to treat cold, cough, vomiting of blood, rakta pitta conditions and also as an antibacterial agent. A decoction of the leaves and bark is prescribed for tuberculosis and asthma. The decoction is also used to wash poisonous bites. It has been used in many villages for the treatment of snake bites.

However, Imbural remains a very effective treatment for excessive bleeding during menstruation and is far superior to many allopathic treatments, which rely on hormones to control or regulate the flow. This allopathic approach has many  unintended side effects.

However, along with Asokadivati, menstrual problems can be tackled very well with our traditional medical systems. Unfortunately, most patients visit allopathic physicians before they decide to try something more effective, like our traditional systems of medicines. Most health problems can be solved easily if they are dealt with in the initial stages.

Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani have a wonderful range of drugs to tackle many of the menstrual problems. From Ashokarishtam and Sathavari Lehyam in the ayurvedic pharmacopeia, to Kungilya Parpam and Padikara Parpam in Siddha, to Qurs-e-Marwareed and Qurs-e-Gulnar in Unani, we have many time-tested and effective remedies.

Our acharyas were quite sensitive to using a particular herb for a particular health condition. They had their theories on what constituted good instruments of knowledge. And it had to be Pratyaksha (direct perception), Anumana (inference) and Yukti (logical application). So, it was not as if these herbs were picked up at random and used. The usage of herbs was monitored and it was empirically evaluated. I find this more reassuring than medicines prescribed by pharmaceutical companies, which have to recoup the crores of rupees they have invested in research and development. These pharma companies often encourage prescription of such drugs for those who may not even need it. The anti-cholesterol drugs, in my view, fall in this category, where even the healthy are led to believe that they have a major health issue and are prescribed drugs with doubtful beneficial value. There are many studies which show that cholesterol levels and heart attacks are not very well correlated. Yet, how successfully has the fear of cholesterol been marketed to help sell anti-cholesterol drugs. My grievance is that in the bargain they have also vilified ghee, one of the most valuable agents of good health.

SIDDHA Management in Autism

This disease is seen among male children rather than female. The reasons for this is still mostly unknown. But some vague theories still prevail. In siddha line of thinking some iregularities or disorders during pregnancy and child delivery time, might have been a cause for this.

This is a disease of "Vatha humor ".The dhathu it affects is "Majhai dhathu ".Majhai dhathu "is seen  less in quantity in such affected children. SIddha medicines prepared in "ghee" are to be better preferred in treatment.
Most Siddha medicines using ADHD treatment are also useful in this case.

Unfortunately many so - called "Varma physicans " of Kanyakumari district are applying strenuous body massage and pressing vital points of children. It is clearly "a wrong choice ".But some "light sirodhara "can be done. But many oral medicines using in Varma are very effective in Autism.

Speech therapy is advisible for such patients. Most special schools having this available now.
Constant tratment for 3 to 5 years can be achieved 75%results. In Siddha systems hundreds of medicines are available for and at intervals medicines should be changed.

Leech therapy in SIDDHA medicine

The European medical leech Hirudo medicinalis and some congeners, as well as some other species, have been used for clinical bloodletting for thousands of years. The use of leeches in medicine dates as far back as 2,500 years ago, when they were used for bloodletting in ancient India. Leech therapy is explained in ancient Ayurvedic texts. Many ancient civilizations practiced bloodletting, including Indian and Greek civilizations. In ancient Greek history, bloodletting was practiced according to the humoral theory, which proposed that, when the four humors, blood, phlegm, black and yellow bile in the human body were in balance, good health was guaranteed. An imbalance in the proportions of these humors was believed to be the cause of ill health. Records of this theory were found in the Greek philosopher Hippocrates' collection in the fifth century BC. Bloodletting using leeches was one method used by physicians to balance the humors and to rid the body of the plethora.

The use of leeches in modern medicine made a small-scale comeback in the 1980s after years of decline, with the advent of microsurgeries, such as plastic and reconstructive surgeries. In operations such as these, problematic venous congestion can arise due to inefficient venous drainage. Sometimes, because of the technical difficulties in forming an anastomosis of a vein, no attempt is made to reattach a venous supply to a flap at all. This condition is known as venous insufficiency. If this congestion is not cleared up quickly, the blood will clot, arteries that bring the tissues their necessary nourishment will become plugged, and the tissues will die. To prevent this, leeches are applied to a congested flap, and a certain amount of excess blood is consumed before the leech falls away. The wound will also continue to bleed for a while due to the anticoagulant hirudin in the leech's saliva. The combined effect is to reduce the swelling in the tissues and to promote healing by allowing fresh, oxygenated blood to reach the area.[37]

The active anticoagulant component of leech saliva is a small protein, hirudin. Discovery and isolation of this protein led to a method of producing it by recombinant technology. Recombinant hirudin is available to physicians as an intravenous anticoagulant preparation for injection, particularly useful for patients who are allergic to or cannot tolerate heparin.

AKSDF urges priority for siddha medicine in kerala state

Considering the demands and complaints of the All  in Kerala, the state government has decided to give immense priority in the proposed health policy of the government for Siddha treatment system, almost equal to Ayurveda. Government plans to promote the system in the state providing support for establishing all kinds of infrastructure facilities.

The Siddha medical graduates’ major demand was to set up one public sector drug manufacturing unit for Siddha. The proposed health policy gives considerable significance to the demand for providing high quality medicines to the public health initiatives for which one exclusive Siddha drug manufacturing unit will be set up.

In the meantime to meet the demand, steps would be taken to equip the existing public sector drug manufacturing unit, Oushadhi to produce Siddha medicines.

Another important proposal for Siddha is that the department of Ayush will conduct one feasibility study for starting Siddha hospitals in district and taluk levels. Further, dispensaries would be started in a phased manner. Very shortly, the number of Siddha dispensaries would be increased.

Siddha system would be given significant emphasize in sports medicines also. Considering the scope of ‘Varma Maruthuvam’ in healing injuries to the energy points in the body, a separate wing for treating sports injuries and other similar traumatic emergencies would be explored through Siddha Varma Therapy.

Similarly efficacy study would be conducted to assess the scope of Siddha to start de-addiction centres. As part of establishing Ayush Infertility Centres, the potential of Siddha would be explored. The government has the mega proposal that a joint Ayush Fertility Centre and Intervention Programme would be launched to reduce the causes for high incidence of infertility in the state.

One Varma Research Institute would be started for Siddha system. Grant would be provided for research projects focusing on the efficacy of all Ayush systems in public health care.

AKSDF (ALL KERALA SIDDHA DOCTORS FORUM ) urge IMPCOPS to open one sales Depot in Calicut,Kerala

Siddha practitioners in Kerala will soon urge Chennai based ‘Impcops’ to open one sales depot in Kozhikode

Peethaambaran Kunnathoor, Chennai
Saturday, March 12, 2016, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]
To meet the increasing demand for Siddha and Unani medicines in Kerala, especially in the northern part (Malabar), the All Kerala Siddha Doctors’ Forum (AKSDF) along with Unani physicians group will soon urge the Chennai based The Indian Medical Practitioners Co-operative Pharmacy (Impcops) to open one sales depot in the Malabar area.

It is viewed that there is immense demand for Siddha and Unani medicines in the northern part of the state, where a lot of practitioners of both the Ayush systems are practicing. Presently, the Ayush healthcare institutions and patients are depending on the state government owned Oushadhi for availing their medical requirements. The practitioners of Siddha feel that if one sales depot of Impcops is opened in Kozhikode, it would benefit the whole people of the entire Malabar area.

“Among the 25 sales depots of Impcops operating in various parts of the country, one is in Thrivananthapuram, near to the Siddha hospital. Oushadhi also procures medicines from this depot for supplying to the Siddha hospital and dispensaries, and Unani institutions. Ninety per cent of the medicines from this depot is bought by Oushadi for Kerala’s domestic use. Medicines to the 28 institutions under the central project (NHM) are also supplied by Oushadhi. Whereas, the Central Siddha Research Council (CCRS) at Thrivananthapuram is directly buying medicines from this depot for their research work. For researches, medicines without containing preservatives have to be used. It is generally believed that Impcops do not add preservatives in medicines. That is why, they bring out ‘Kashaayam’ in powder form,” said Dr. Arun Baby, president of AKSDF.

He said if one more depot is opened in Thrissur district, Oushadhi can reduce their risk in collecting and distributing medicines from Thrivananthapuram depot. The depot in the state capital is very much profit making and its turnover is increasing every year. The total revenue in the last fiscal was Rs. 1.5 crore, said Dr Arun, who is also one of the directors of the cooperative pharmacy.

While explaining the scope for Siddha medicines in Kerala, he pointed out that the recent establishment of a Unani medical college in Kozhikodu will support the sale growth of the depot. Besides there are a lot of Unani doctors in Kozhikode, Wynadu and the nearby places. The members of the cooperative society will get 25 per cent discount for all medicines bought from Impcops. More than one thousand Ayurveda physicians from Kerala are Impcops members.

Even though the request for starting another depot in Kerala is put to Impcops, the association of Siddha graduates will first approach the state government for all sorts of help and advice. AKSDF has the future plan that a Siddha medical college should be started in Kerala under cooperative sector and deliberations are going on among the Forum members now.

To a question on acceptance on Siddha drugs in Kerala, he said even though the number of followers of Ayurveda is large in Kerala, the number of followers of Siddha system is increasing every day in the state. Similar case is with Unani also, he added.

AKSDF (ALL KERALA SIDDHA DOCTORS FORUM ) want equal consideration with Ayurveda under Govt. Sector

Siddha graduates in Kerala want equal consideration with Ayurveda under govt sector    Peethaambaran Kunnathoor, Chennai  Wednesday, March 09, 2016, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]      Stating that Agasthya Muni, the first among the 18 Siddhars, who is also considered as the father of Siddha medical science, has geographical connection with Kerala, the All Kerala Siddha Doctors Forum (AKSDF) has urged the state government to give due consideration to the graduates of Siddha and to the system of treatment just as given to Ayurveda and to the practitioners in that field.  AKSDF, an association of Kerala Siddha graduates who did BSMS course in Santhigiri Siddha Medical College at Thiruvananthapuram, argues that Ayush/ISM does not mean Ayurveda alone. It includes Siddha, Unani, Homoeopathy, Naturopathy and yoga besides Ayurveda. In Kerala, the government, department of Ayush as well as the common people is forced to think that Ayush means Ayurveda, or Ayurveda is the major stream in Ayush. This misconception was inculcated among the people and the authorities by a group of Ayurveda physicians in the state. They do not want other streams of Ayush to grow or to be promoted in Kerala. This tendency has to be opposed and every system has to be given ample chances for growth and practice, said Dr. Arun Baby, the president of Kerala Siddha Doctors Forum.  While briefing Pharmabiz about the forthcoming strikes and agitations planned to be conducted across the state by the Siddha graduates, he said the Ayurveda practitioners association could succeed in convincing the government that Ayurveda is the only traditional treatment system of Kerala. “It is a mistaken belief. Ayurveda was not originated in Kerala. It is described in classical Sanskrit literature. The language and the Aryans were migrated to India from central Asia and the eastern part of the Europe. Whereas, Siddha system is described in old Tamil classical literature and claims a divine origin of Indian back ground,” says Dr. Arun Baby.   Regarding geographical connection with Kerala, he points out that Agasthya Muni is also called ‘Ananthasayanam Kumbha Muni’ as Agasthyar’s attainment place is ‘Ananathasayanam’ which is otherwise known as ‘Ananthapuri’, presently called Thiru-Aananthapuram. This means that the first Siddhar spent his last days in the southern part of Kerala adjacent to Tamil Nadu. Agasthya Koodam hills is in Trivandrum district, and the tribal people of that hill area are still worshiping Agasthyar. These are all indications of the traditional system’s connection with Kerala.   The varma and massage treatments were generated in Siddha and later absorbed by Ayurveda. The specialists in 108 varma methods are found in Kanyakumari district only. During the last period of Agasthyar, he handed over the knowledge of Siddha to many of his disciples in the southern parts of Kerala. These places are now in Tamil Nadu.   With this tradition, the Siddha doctors’ forum will make demand for equal consideration for Siddha system under Ayush department. Healthcare institutions such as dispensaries, primary health centres, hospitals, medical colleges and research centres should be established and posts of doctors and para medical staffs should be created. Currently, about 600 graduates in siddha are seeking jobs in the state. Out of this, 600 BSMS holders, 450 were graduated from Santhigiri and 150 from the Siddha Medical College at Palayamkottai in Tamil Nadu.   In Kerala, there is only one government Siddha hospital and it is located at Vallakkadavu in the state capital. Further, there are eight dispensaries. The government sanctioned the last dispensary in 1986. After that, in the last 30 years no dispensary or hospital for Siddha has been sanctioned.  The present UDF government has sanctioned 77 Ayurveda dispensaries and 150 Homoeo dispensaries in various Punchayaths. Kerala is going to become the first state in the country with Ayurveda and Homoeo dispensaries in all the Punchayaths. At present Kerala has 127  hospitals, 815 dispensaries, 20 sub-centres and three medical colleges under government, and 14 private medical colleges, and two self-financing medical colleges for Ayurveda system.

Nilavembu gets wonder drug tag

CHENNAI: When the state health department offered preventive doses of the siddha preparation -nilavembu juice -to the city's flood-affected, it stirred up many modern medicine practitioners. A variety of specialists raised valid concerns on social media about the way it is prepared and dispensed, but there was a larger problem. No one was sure of its efficiency.

At state-run King Institute of Preventive medicine, doctors decided the dichotomy between traditional and modern medicine was itself false. "We thought what mat ters was science, not whether the drug was siddha, ayurveda or western," said director Dr P Gunasekaran.

At the institute's laboratory, researchers studied the efficacy of the herbal preparation against the human cell lines and found it had high anti-viral properties."Our study is yet to be published, but there have been several scientific papers on the medicinal properties of this drug. In fact it is hailed as a wonder drug because it is both preventive and curative," he said.

It exhibits anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and immune boosting qualities, scientists said.
