Physico-chemical and HPTLC analysis of some herbal drugs used in Siddha System for skin diseases 

Siddha system is effective in treating most skin problems including psoriasis. There are so many common herbal drugs which are used for the treatment of skin diseases in Siddha system. Five plants - Acalypha indica Linn. (Leaf), Aristolochia bracteolata Retz. (Wholeplant), Capparis zeylanica Linn. (Leaf), Sterculia foetida Linn.(Stem bark) and Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R. Br. (Stem bark) are selected for physico-chemical and HPTLC analysis. 

• The plant extracts when subjected to HPTLC studies, resolved into a large number of bands showing that a large number of constituents are present in each of the plant material. 

• Chemical fingerprints obtained by chromatographic techniques are strongly recommended for the purpose of quality control of herbal medicines, since they might represent appropriately the chemical integrities of the herbal medicines and therefore be used for authentication and identification of herbal plant.
